Everything you need to know about skin aging

Skin aging

Skin aging is unfortunately inevitable. It happens faster for some than for others, and that is partly due to genetic factors that you can do little about. But there are also external influences that accelerate the aging process of the skin, and there you can do something about it to affect.
You probably already know the main causes of wrinkles from the outside: the sun, smoking and stress are major culprits. However, there are other factors that you may not immediately think of. That is why I will list everything for you and give you tips on how to delay and reduce wrinkles and other signs of skin aging for as long as possible.

When does skin aging start?

Skin aging actually starts around the age of twenty. Subtle changes occur in the upper skin layers, which you usually do not notice. From the age of 35 or 40, however, these changes gradually become visible. Smooth skin makes way for frown lines, nose folds and crow's feet.
This process is different for everyone, and the speed at which your skin ages is partly determined by your genes. But the good news is that your lifestyle also plays a major role. Sun exposure, stress, smoking and pollution can accelerate the aging process. For example, did your parents smoke a lot and spend a lot of time in the sun, but you avoid it? Then you are probably less likely to suffer from wrinkles and sagging skin, despite your genetic predisposition.

How does the skin aging process work?

Why does your skin lose firmness, become drier and wrinkles appear? Various processes in the skin play a role in this:

Thinner top layer of skin.
The skin becomes more vulnerable to external influences because the top layer becomes thinner.

Decrease in collagen and elastin
From your late twenties onwards, the production of collagen and elastin, the 'pillars' of your skin, decreases by about 1 to 1.5 percent per year. This makes your skin less firm and elastic.

Decrease in sebum production
Around menopause, due to hormonal changes, sebum production decreases. This makes the skin drier and more sensitive.

Loss of bone tissue
As you age, the structure of your face changes. Your cheekbones become flatter, your jawline shrinks, and your eye sockets become larger, leading to more bags.

Loss of volume
Subcutaneous fat tissue decreases, shifts and sags, partly due to the loss of bone tissue. Muscle mass also slowly decreases.

“These are all natural processes, and unfortunately you can see this in the mirror: your face starts to sag more and wrinkles become more visible. As mentioned before, this process is different for everyone and is strongly influenced by your genes. This is called intrinsic aging, and there is little you can do about it.
External factors, such as a lot of sun, smoking or living in a polluted environment, accelerate the breakdown of collagen and elastin. This is called extrinsic aging. Fortunately, you can influence this form of skin aging..”
