Eczema

Dry, red and itchy skin can indicate eczema. But what exactly causes this condition, and how can you best care for your skin to relieve symptoms?

What is eczema?

Eczema is an inflammatory reaction of the skin, which can be temporary or chronic and is triggered by various external or internal factors. In many cases, hereditary predisposition plays a role. Eczema is common in children, but adults can also develop it, even if they didn't suffer from it as a child.

Eczema has several forms

Constitutional (atopic) eczema: Chronic form, often starts early and is often hereditary. Belongs to the atopic syndrome, together with hay fever and asthma.

Allergic contact dermatitis:
Skin reaction after contact with allergens such as perfume or preservatives.

Seborrheic eczema:
Red, inflamed areas with greasy scales, often in areas with many sebaceous glands (such as the face and scalp).

Although the symptoms can vary from person to person, itching, redness and sometimes blisters are typical symptoms of eczema.

Can you use cosmetics for eczema?

Cosmetics can sometimes aggravate eczema symptoms, especially products with ingredients such as fragrances or preservatives. However, using cosmetics does not always have to be a problem. Try new products on a small area of skin first to see how your skin reacts.

Skin care for eczema

Good care can often keep eczema symptoms under control. Keep the following in mind:

Shower or bath:
Use lukewarm water and avoid soaps and foaming products. Add oatmeal to bath water for relief.

Suitable products:
Use gentle products for sensitive skin. For the face, a gentle cleanser combined with a hydrating moisturizer or jojoba oil is a good choice. For dry patches, a rich cream with soothing ingredients, such as oatmeal extract, can help.

When to see a doctor?

Eczema can be complex and persistent, and not all causes are known. If symptoms persist, it is wise to consult a doctor. Treatment can vary and include allergy tests, medicinal creams, light therapy or antihistamines.

Do you suffer from eczema? With the right care and support, you can soothe your skin and reduce symptoms.
